Description

Thor was the Viking god of thunder. Thor used his hammer to rule and wield justice. During a thunderstorm, Thor was believed to be riding a chariot pulled by goats along the sky. The hammer blows created thunder, and the sparks created lightning. A pendant representing a hammer became a common symbol of Thor, also believed to contain forces that protected against evil. The pendant was worn especially by the notorious Vikings. Examples of jewellery date back to the Viking Age between 800 and 1050 AD. The larger pendant was found in Ylipää, Lieto, while the model for the smaller was found in Kansakoulumäki, Laitila.
